.:Zakopane was established with King Batory's act of 1578 and was granted municipal rights in 1933. There are 30.000 permanent inhabitants in Zakopane. The TATRA mountains cover the area of 785 square km but only 1/5 of the total area belongs to Poland. The highest peak is Mt Gerlach at 2.654 m asl (Slovakia) and the highest Polish peak is Mt Rysy (2.499 m asl). The Tatras are divided into three distinct parts: the Western Tatras, High Tatras and the Bielanske Tatras. The TATRA NATIONAL PARK was established in 1954, and it covers the area of 21.164 hectares and there are about 250 km of marked hiking trails (the colours of the trails do not correspond to the difficulty scale of those). The most characteristic animals are chamois (the symbol of the Tatra National Park) and marmots. There are also brown bears, wolves, foxes, deer, otters and lynxes living in the forests.
.:ZAKOPANE AT ITS MOST BEAUTIFUL

.:In JANUARY the days are short and cold, but skiing conditions usually the best. At the turn of January and February school children have their winter break at schools, which results directly in huge crowds of tourists and skiers everywhere in the town and on slopes. The end of February and the whole month of MARCH are skiers' favourite time. IN APRIL there's still snow galore on Mount Kasprowy. Additionally, the month is known for thousands of tiny crocuses blooming on the Tatra clearings. MAY is a real spring month. IN JUNE Zakopane gets quiet, the days are long and mostly sunny, the mountain paths welcome tourists tired of the crowds. JULY and AUGUST, the two summer months are the peak season. The easier trails get very crowded, and on sunny days at the most popular peaks there are queues of people waiting to climb the top. There is a lot going on in the town in summer - cultural and recreational events are organised, the most distinguished of all being the Mountain Folklore Festival, held the last week in August for over 36 years now. SEPTEMBER is a very good month for hiking trips, the days are still long enough, the weather usually good, there are no more holidays crowds. OCTOBER might both be very sunny and chilly with the first snowfalls in the mountains. NOVEMBER is a rest time after a busy tourist season. From the very beginnings of DECEMBER some of the ski slopes are open and well prepared for skiers and snowboarders. Christmas in Zakopane is an unique experience. The town gets beautifully decorated, usually covered with loads of fresh fallen snow. Small wooden chapels at mountains trails welcome to Midnight Mass. New Year is welcomed outside at hundreds bonfires held everywhere in the town. New Year's balls are organised in pensions, hotels and restaurants. At this time of the year the traditional sleigh rides KULIG enjoy great popularity, horse drawn sleighs with torches are seen and horse bells heard everywhere in the town.

Koniec stycznia i LUTY to okres szkolnych ferii zimowych i duże nasilenie ruchu turystycznego odczuwalne przede wszystkim na stokach narciarskich. Koniec lutego i cały MARZEC to wymarzony czas dla narciarzy.W KWIETNIU śniegu na Kasprowym Wierchu jest wciąż pod dostatkiem. Miesiąc ten słynie z pięknie kwitnących krokusów. MAJ to czas prawdziwej wiosny.W CZERWCU Zakopane jest ciche, dni długie i często słoneczne a puste szlaki zapraszają na wycieczki. Podczas górskich wypraw należy zachować ostrożność ponieważ w żlebach i wyższych partiach Tatr zalega często śnieg.LIPIEC i SIERPIEŃ to okres wysokiego sezonu turystycznego. Najłatwiej dostępne szlaki bywają zatłoczone, a w słoneczne dni pod najpopularniejszymi szczytami ustawiają się kolejki. W wakacje w mieście najwięcej się dzieje - organizowane są różne imprezy plenerowe, rekreacyjne i kulturalne, których kulminacją jest niezwykle interesujący Festiwal Ziem Górskich, odbywający się w Zakopanem w ostatnim tygodniu sierpnia od ponad 36 lat.WRZESIEŃ to bardzo dobry miesiąc na wycieczki górskie - dni są jeszcze wystarczająco długie, pogoda zwykle dopisuje, a na szlakach i w schroniskach nie ma już wakacyjnych tłumów. PAŹDZIERNIK potrafi być słoneczny i prezentować piekną Tatrzańską Jesień, albo bardzo chłodny z pierwszymi opadami śniegu. LISTOPAD to miesiąc, w którym Zakopane odpoczywa po całym zimowo-letnim sezonie turystycznym.Od początku GRUDNIA niektóre stoki narciarskie są już przygotowane dla narciarzy i snowboardzistów. Boże Narodzenie w Zakopanem jest piękne. Miasto jest wspaniale przystrojone, zwykle malowniczo pokryte świeżym śniegiem. Kaplice położone przy górskich szlakach zapraszają na niezapomniane pasterki. Nowy Rok wielu turystów wita w plenerze, przy ogniskach. Organizowanych jest wiele bali sylwestrowych w ośrodkach wczasowych i hotelach. W okresie noworocznym niezwykłą popularnością cieszą się kuligi konne z pochodniami i wszędzie na ulicach słychać dźwięk dzwonków zawieszonych przy końskich uprzężach.
