How many different kinds of friends are there?

How many different kinds of friends are there? Throughout the centuries, following the so-called herd instinct, people have tried to surround themselves with the other people similar to them. They have shared interests and hobbies, supported each other, had fun together etc. With the flow of time, they have started to call each other 'friends.' But, depending on how close the one is for us, we can distinguish three main subcategories of friends: schoolmates and colleagues, party friends and real friends.

The first and the most numerous category, schoolmates and colleagues, are the people with whom we are randomly encountered in our everyday life and we are usually not very closely related to. Actually, we can be quite lucky or unlucky about that, i.e. we can meet in the school or in the office either a great and friendly person with similar interests as ours, or the very opposite of us. This is always a kind of lottery whenever we change the job or school. The main feature of schoolmates and colleagues is that kind of a friendship is usually temporary: those friendships break apart after changing the job or the school.

The second numerous group of friends in our lives are party friends. This kind of a relationship between people is based only on shared interests and hobbies and having fun together, thus they are the least close for us. You cannot rely on a party friend, talk to him sincerely about your problems nor even confide him a secret. On the other hand, this a party friend who provides us most of fun in our lives, and this is the party friend who lets us lose time with reality for a while when we need it the most. That is why I find that category of friends as the most superficial and shallow, yet necessary for one's psychical balance.

The last subgroup of friends consist of the people who are the most important for us and are the closest to our hearts. Therefore, only a few people can be classified as real friends in one's whole life. This is a group of friends you can always rely on. You can also confide them a secret or talk to them frankly about your problems and worries. Moreover, whenever you ask them for help, you can be sure you will receive it. A real friend is a kind of person who is always next to you to support you in any possible way when you need it.

To sum up, there is a number of different kinds of acquaintances and friends but the three major categories are: schoolmates and colleagues, party friends and real friends. This is of vital importance for the health of one's psyche to have someone to chat with in school or work, someone to have fun on Friday's night and someone to support you when needed. That is why each of us should have at least a few friends from each category.
